The programme for the conference was formed from ten different tracks and was introduced by inspiring keynote speakers.

Through concrete experiences, examples and research, discussions and reflections, participants could get ideas on how cities can work towards the global sustainability goals and make them their own. The conference was intended for those working in the public and private sectors, academia and civil society.

The Sustainable City Development Conference 2016 is part of the international SBE series of conferences focusing on a sustainable built environment. It was a meeting point for researchers and practitioners as we believe that there is high potential to discuss and co-create new ideas and solutions. The conference was therefore welcoming academic papers. There were also exhibitors on site with inspirational examples.

Malmö municipality has over the last 20 years organised ten international conferences and major events on sustainable urban development, including four Sustainable City Development Conferences, in 2001, 2003, 2005 and 2007. The UN's new 17 global sustainability goals mean local challenges and here is neither a lack of will or initiative in Malmö to achieve them.

The conference was held at Malmö Live, an award-winning green building in central Malmö.
