Nuts & Needles

Foraging walk and making baskets from the offerings of two trees of Malmö’s urban forest: the black pine and the black walnut.

How is it exactly that a tree from the Americas and a tree from the Mediterranean have come be part of Malmö's urban landscape? As we walk and weave, we will look the history, movement, and ecology of these two, now global, species, and consider why certain trees are planted in the cities and others aren’t. We will talk about the roles that city’s reserve for trees and the many aspects of the urban environment that make it hostile to forest growth. Highlighting the relationships that these trees have to people, other nonhuman’s of the city, and the climate. The baskets we make together will be a combined study of two traditional techniques from outside of Sweden. One from North America–home of the black walnut–and one from the Mediterranean basin–home of the black pine. Working directly with these trees we will practice a way of relating to these species that is virtually nonexistent in cities, as a way of thinking about our material relationship to trees, the forest, and our city.
