Unemployment

  • Unemployment in Malmö rose for several years after the finance crisis in 2008.
  • By 2016, youth unemployment in Malmö fell, whilst employment in general remained almost unchanged compared to the preceding year.
  • Unemployment in 2016 was higher for men than women, and amongst young adults the difference was even greater.
  • There are significant differences in the number of unemployed in different groups – higher amongst young adults, higher amongst immigrants regardless of education, and higher for men than women in all groups.
  • Compared with other large cities in Sweden, unemployment in Malmö is high.

The Swedish Public Employment Service began to count unemployment in % of the workforce (as opposed to the population), which makes the figures higher. Every year has been converted in the graph above to match the previous method of measurement. The new method puts the total number of unemployed for Malmö 2016 at 14.9%.

  • Youth unemployment is dropping fast in the three biggest cities and nationally.
  • But the decrease is not to the benefit of all young adults. Unemployment is higher amongst young immigrants, and especially amongst those aged 18-24.
