International work

Malmö has a number of international contacts, partnerships and networks in the international arena. Maintaining a good relationship with the outside world is therefore of great importance. It creates dynamism and paves the way for the exchange of ideas as well as the exchange of expertise and development.

The international work has it´s guidance in the policy of international work, a municipality-wide policy document, which aims to create a common platform with three strategic priorities: organizational development, strategic influence, and city profiling.

The City of Malmö EU network

The City of Malmö EU network, with an EU-coordinator from each department, acts as a link between the central municipal function and the departments. Furthermore, the City of Malmö EU network is responsible for ensuring the spread of information within the departments.

The City of Malmö EU-Office in Brussels

The City of Malmö’s representation in Brussels serves as a support office for the city’s departments. Located in the heart of the EU institutions, the office is permanently staffed by one position from the City Office’s unit for External Relations and Business Development. It is part of Malmö’s International Policy and aims to fulfil objectives related to organizational development, strategic influence, and profiling. Priorities are guided by the municipal budget, overarching city goals, and an annual operational plan. The office also hosts interns from universities and colleges, as well as secondments from Malmö’s own departments.

The Brussels Office’s Tasks Include:

  • monitoring EU funds and programs
  • establishing and developing contacts
  • assisting with project applications
  • developing project ideas in collaboration with city departments
  • engaging in lobbying and monitoring policy issues
  • promoting the City of Malmö and its interests

Twinning cities

Increased internationalization and other strategic contacts in the EU have changed the conditions for the international work. Today's twinning is more about establishing partnerships around concrete cooperation projects, where the direct benefit to the various activities within the collaborating cities is substantial.

Through these partnerships, the city builds relationships across national borders and creates opportunities for people to meet, learn, and grow together. Most of these agreements are currently dormant and are reactivated upon request when there is interest in collaboration on a specific project.
