Spring Semester

Classes for the spring semester begin around the second week of January and conclude at the end of May.

During the February, Easter, summer, and autumn breaks, there is no regular teaching at kulturskolan.

In-service Day

Kulturskolan typically schedules several in-service days each semester, during which no classes are held. Teachers will provide advance notice of these dates.

Kulturskolans Student System

Our courses are offered to children and young people aged 7 to 18 who are registered residents of Malmö.

You can enroll your child from January 1st in the year they reach the eligible age for the course.

You cannot enroll if your child will exceed the course's upper age limit during the current year.

Our courses automatically apply age restrictions. Upon logging in to enroll, only the courses suitable for your age will be displayed. If you age out of a course for which you are already enrolled, your enrollment will be canceled.

If you have already enrolled, you can change your course selection through your user account.

Each child may participate in only one course per semester. Given the popularity of kulturskolan, it is crucial to us that as many children and youths as possible can participate in at least one course.

Besides individual instruction, kulturskolan highly values ensemble play, which is why students can also join various school orchestras, choirs, or other musical groups.

Please update your and your children's contact information in kulturskolan’s system if you change your email, phone number, or address. If you have protected personal information, do not register online. Instead, call us at 040-34 48 00 to handle your enrollment manually.

If you are an active student at a music and arts school in another municipality and move to Malmö, register on our website and submit a written verification from your previous school to receive priority for an available course in the subject area you are currently studying.

Admission

  • Enrollment offers are prioritized based on the date of application, age, and group composition.
  • Offers for non-instrument courses begin in June. Everyone who receives an offer will be notified via email.
  • If you do not receive an offer, you will remain on the waiting list.
  • Occasionally, we may offer spots to students during the ongoing semester when openings arise.
  • Instrument course offers are issued in August. All accepted students will be contacted by kulturskolan at that time.

Upon acceptance, you are registered as an active student at kulturskolan for the entire semester. The semester fee is then due.

If you receive an offer and choose not to accept it, you must cancel it through your account on the student system (link available at the top of the page). If you do not cancel in time, you are responsible for the next semester's fees.

Information about withdrawal deadlines will be included in your offer letter.

If you wish to withdraw but remain on the waiting list, please email us at kulturskolan@malmo.se.

If you decline or do not respond to three consecutive offers for the same course, you will be removed from the waiting list.

Waiting list

Due to high demand for certain courses, some applicants are placed on a waiting list. Offers are extended as spots become available.

It is difficult to say how long the waiting lists are, as each course at the cultural school has its own queue. The length of the queues also changes because we frequently adjust and redistribute resources, which can make a long queue quickly become shorter.

The courses that usually have the longest waiting lists are piano, keyboard, violin, guitar, electric guitar, electric bass, percussion, vocal group, and some beginner courses in visual arts, dance, comic drawing, and theater.

You must confirm your desire to remain on the waiting list when contacted via email in May. Failure to do so will result in the loss of your spot.

Each course has its own waiting list. If you wish to switch to a different course while maintaining your place on the list, please contact us at kulturskolan@malmo.se, specifying your current and desired courses.

Instruction Details

The main building of kulturskolan is located at Friisgatan 15B, where we offer instruction in all subjects. Additional classes are held in other parts of the city.

The number of lessons varies per semester, but we guarantee 25 lessons during an academic year. Adjustments to the schedule may occur due to concerts, performances, exhibitions, and projects.

You have a lesson once a week. Some courses in visual arts, animation/film, and comic drawing are given as double lessons every other week. Additional rehearsals may be scheduled before concerts, performances, and exhibitions. The teacher will inform you about this in good time.

The lesson duration varies between different courses and usually ranges from 30 minutes to up to two hours for the older students. If you want to know the times for a specific course, please contact us at kulturskolan@malmo.se.

All instruction at kulturskolan is conducted in groups, including for instrumental music.

Teachers send notifications about the start of the semester in August to all students by mail, email, or SMS.

Note: No separate notifications are sent for the start of the spring semester.

If a lesson needs to be cancelled, we will notify you by SMS or email.

If a student cannot attend a lesson, a parent/guardian must notify the teacher before the class via phone, SMS, or email. Unreported absences are considered unexcused.

If a student has three consecutive unexcused absences, they will lose their spot at kulturskolan. For courses with bi-weekly double sessions, two unexcused absences will result in loss of enrollment.

To withdraw from a course, a parent/guardian or adult student must formally deregister through kulturskolan’s student system.

The last day to withdraw before the fall semester is August 1st, and before the spring semester is December 30th. If you miss these deadlines, you are financially responsible for the upcoming semester. The same deadlines apply for returning rented instruments.

To switch courses, log into your user account and apply for the course you desire. Upon receiving an offer for the new course, you must withdraw from the current one.

All students must confirm annually in May that they wish to continue their course for the upcoming fall semester.

Students may take a break from their course only in cases of illness or extended stays abroad.

Fees and Payment Terms

Courses cost 300 SEK per semester. Ensembles, choirs, and orchestras are free for students already paying the semester fee. Otherwise, they also cost 300 SEK/semester. Instrument rental is priced at 200 SEK/semester.

Yes, there is a sibling discount. When a bill payer has more than one child under 18 years old attending kulturskolan, they receive a discount of 100 SEK/semester for the second child, 200 SEK/semester for the third child, and subsequent children attend for free.

Once you receive a spot, or if you do not withdraw your spot in time according to our rules, you are obligated to pay for the semester.

Invoices for the fall semester are sent in October, and invoices for the spring semester are sent in February. Reminders are sent if payment is not made on time.

Unpaid invoices are transferred to the collections department of Malmö city.

The last day to withdraw before the fall semester is August 1st, and before the spring semester is December 30th. If you withdraw after these dates, you are financially responsible for the upcoming semester. The same deadlines apply for returning rented instruments.

Would you like your next invoice as an e-invoice? Register for the e-invoice service at your online bank and select "Malmö stad" as the payment recipient/company.

We do not refund or reduce fees if you withdraw during an ongoing semester.
