No, attending preschool is voluntary, but most children in Sweden attend preschool.

In preschool, children have the opportunity to develop and learn by playing, creating and exploring. The children are taught different subjects such as maths, science and the Swedish language. The children get to sing, paint, dance, talk and write in collaboration with other children.

Children can start attending preschool from the age of one.

You can apply for a placement for your child if you are studying, actively looking for work or on parental leave. Your child may also be granted a place for physical and psychological reasons, due to the family's situation or if the child needs special developmental support for other reasons.

Yes. The staff at the preschool have extensive experience in accommodating children who speak other languages than Swedish. Young children can easily learn several languages at the same time. In the preschool, the child learns Swedish but can also receive support in their native language.

The fee for preschool is calculated based on the family's income. When you apply for a place, both guardians must provide an income notification, otherwise your fee will be incorrect.

Yes. All children in Sweden are entitled to attend free general preschool from the autumn term of the year in which the child turns 3 years old. The child can attend general preschool for 15 hours a week free of charge. During compulsory school holidays, the child is on leave from the preschool. Children are entitled to attend free public preschool even if you as a parent or guardian are not working, studying or actively looking for work.

No, but you can request up to five preschools when applying for a placement. The City of Malmö uses the child's civil registration when making placements.

Yes. In order to offer the best possible place for your child, it is important that we are aware of your child's needs. Send a letter with your application describing your child's need for support.
