Housing and homelessness
Over the past five years, an average of roughly 3,000 homes have been built per year in Malmö. At the same time, the population has increased by roughly 4,500 people per year. Thus, housing construction has kept pace with the population increase.
Housing
Around 2,550 new homes were completed in 2022 and there were approximately 6,000 homes under production at the turn of the year.
The majority of the new homes that became move-in ready in the past year are in Hyllie, Västra Hamnen, Limhamn and Norra Sorgenfri.
Need for housing
The conditions for housing construction and the housing market changed dramatically in 2022. Recession and events in the outside world have resulted in a sharp slowdown in housing construction starts. At the same time, there is a large production of new housing that began in the previous years. There is a large supply of new housing but there is also a shortage of housing at lower costs.
Homelessness
In 2023 there were 1,288 homeless adults in Malmö. That is a decrease by 93 people from the same time the previous year. The number of children in homeless families has been decreased from 401 to 322.
Social homelessness is the term for people with substance abuse problems and/or mental illness who are in need of support from social services (812 people). Structural homelessness, i.e. when a person does not have their own place of residence due to economic factors associated with acquiring a residence (476 people).
