Population
Malmö is the third largest city in Sweden and it is the fastest-growing of the three major cities in Sweden. The populaiton growth can be explained by a large number of births, a low number of deaths and an increased amount of people moving to the city. Malmö has a young population, nearly half of which is under the age of 35.

Population growth
There are 362,133 residents living in Malmö (31 December 2023). It is the fastest growing large city in Sweden. Compared to 2021 the population increased by 4,756 new Malmö residents (1.3 %). The high number of births are responsible for the greater part of the population increase. Malmö accounted for about 36 per cent of the population increase in Skåne from 1990-2023.
Age structure
Malmö has a young population. Roughly half of Malmö residents are under the age of 35 (47%). 21 per cent are under 18 years old and 18 per cent are between 25 and 34 years old. 4,429 children were born in Malmö in 2023.
Migration pattern
People of all ages are moving both to and from Malmö. Migration between larger cities in general and the rest of the country has a clear pattern, where the migration patterns vary in size for different age groups. The largest influx takes place in the age group of 20-25 years. Parents ages 30-45 account for the greatest share of people moving to another municipality. They often settle in municipalities within a commuting distance. Their children often move back to Malmö when they grow older. The domestic migration pattern in Malmö does not differ greatly from the other large cities, Göteborg and Stockholm.
Origin of the population
People from 186 different countries live in Malmö apart from Sweden (2023). Roughly one-third of Malmö's residents were born in another country. The percentage of residents born abroad has increased in the country as a whole. There are more people born in other countries living in the large cities in comparison with the rest of the country. About one-fourth of the residents in Stockholm and Göteborg were born abroad.
Population forecast
Each year, the City of Malmö provides a population forecast for the next ten years. It is an important tool for the planning for Malmö's future. The 2024 population forecast shows, among other things, that the number of Malmö residents is expected to increase by about 34,000 new residents by 2034. In total 396,000 residents 2034.
The most common countries of origin
People from 186 different countries live in Malmö. Among those born outside Sweden, the most common group comes from Iraq. In 2023 there were 11,645 Iraqis living in Malmö.
Other common countries of origin of Malmö residents are Syria (9,087), Denmark (7,803), Yugoslavia (6,987), Poland (6,614) and Bosnia-Herzegovina (6,347). Afghanistan, Lebanon and Iran are each represented by approximately 4,000 - 5,000 residents.
