Registering at compulsory school for children recently arrived in Sweden

Children and adolescents aged 6-16 years who have recently arrived in Malmö must register at Skolstart Malmö in order to apply for compulsory school. This also applies to children who have previously lived in Sweden but who have not been to a Swedish school during the past 6 months because they have been living in another country.

School is compulsory for children who have a Swedish national id number and are registered in Sweden.

If the child has been to a Swedish school in the past 6 months, you do not have to sign up for a registration meeting at Skolstart Malmö. Instead you can send in an application for a place at compulsory school.

In order to be registered for compulsory school, you must first sign up for a registration meeting at Skolstart Malmö.

Once you have signed up for a registration meeting, you will be contacted by Skolstart Malmö, who will make an appointment for you to attend a registration meeting at Pilgatan 7. It is at this meeting that your child will be registered for compulsory school.

The child and all the child’s legal guardians (parents) shall attend this meeting, and proof of the child’s identity must be provided. This also applies to children who have previously lived in Sweden but who have not been to a Swedish school during the past 6 months because they have been living in another country.

If you have questions, please call 040-34 10 00 or send an email to malmostad@malmo.se.

1. The first visit to Skolstart Malmö

When you visit Skolstart Malmö, your child will be registered and will thereafter apply for a place at a school.

2. Screening and health check

All newly arrived students will see a nurse at Skolstart Malmö for a health check.

At Skolstart Malmö, school children who have recently arrived in Sweden are prepared for the resumption of their studies in Malmö. The child’s previous learning and experience will be screened, in accordance with the procedures of the National Agency for Education.

This assessment is not a test, and your child does not need to make any preparations for it. The screening is done in your child’s strongest language with the help of an interpreter.

The first screening

The first screening concerns the child’s previous educational background and experiences, and which languages the child uses. Parents/guardians are also involved in the discussion with the teacher, together with their child.

The second screening

The aim of the second screening is to find out the child’s level of reading comprehension in their native language, as well as your child’s mathematical thinking.

3. Decision on the allocation of a school place

When a decision about a school place has been made, you will be contacted directly by the school that your child shall attend.

For students in school years 1–9, a copy of the assessment will be sent to the school so that the principal can decide which year and which group your child shall be in.
