Economic aid
The Labour market and social welfare committee has implemented a series of measures to reduce the need for economic aid in order to increase their likelihood of self-reliance.
Households who received economic aid
The average number of households in Malmö that applied for and received financial assistance was 6,299 per month in 2025. This represents a decrease of 2.2 per cent compared with 2024. In total, 9,507 unique households received financial assistance during the year, which was 2.5 per cent fewer than in the previous year.
This trend indicates that the need for financial assistance continues to decline in Malmö. However, the proportion of adults receiving financial assistance remains higher in Malmö than in Sweden as a whole.
More Malmö residents in work
In 2025, 1,776 people moved on to employment or education after receiving support from the Labour Market Department, compared with 1,207 people in 2024. The 2025 figures include the Malmökraften initiative, which became part of regular operations in 2025.
The proportion of young people with financial assistance
Of the households receiving social assistance in 2025, an average of 827 per month were households in which the main applicant* was aged 18–29. The number of households headed by young adults (aged 18–29) decreased by 4.3% compared with the previous year, a larger decrease than among the older age groups.
