Civic Orientation (Samhällsorientering på engelska)

Civic orientation is a course about Swedish society for those who have recently moved to Sweden. The course provides important information to help you get a good start in Malmö.

How to register for Civic orientation

You can register for Civic orientation throughout the year. There is no deadline for registration.

About Civic Orientation

In the civic orientation course, you will gain knowledge about your rights and obligations, Swedish democracy, and how Swedish society is organized.

The course covers practical everyday life, including issues related to work and education, housing, health and healthcare, as well as children and families. The course is taught in your native language or another language that you know. You are invited to listen, ask questions and engage in discussions. The course is free of charge.

The course is adapted individually based on your needs and circumstances. You can combine your studies with work, activities, and other studies, such as SFI (Swedish for Immigrants).

Who can take the civic orientation course?

Civic orientation is for you who are between the ages of 18 and 66 who have recently been granted residence permit in Sweden.

The course is divided into four modules

The civic orientation course is at least 100 hours and typically consists of four parts. The course can be taken at Komvux Kungsgatan 44 or online via Teams (with some mandatory in-person lessons at the school). Courses are available in the mornings, afternoons, and evenings.

You may also be offered extended Civic orientation with additional themes, such as study visits, parent courses, discussion circles, and more.

Module 1 (30 hours) includes, among other things, information about Sweden’s history, housing and safety.

Module 2 (27 hours) includes, among other things, information about the labor market in Sweden, adult education, the rights and obligations of the individual.

Module 3 (18 hours) includes, among other things, information about children’s rights, starting a family and living with children, as well as about influencing (having an impact) in Sweden.

Module 4 (27 hours) includes, among other things, information about migration and health, rights and obligations in meetings with healthcare and ageing in Sweden.

  • Finding your way in healthcare and rights and obligations in meetings with healthcare
  • ANDTS (alcohol, narcotics, doping, tobacco, and gambling)
  • Dental health
  • SRHR (Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights)

  • Women’s health
  • Society for the elderly, and when someone dies
  • Course conclusion with coffee and evaluation.

After the course

After the course, you will receive a certificate sent home if you have had an attendance of at least 85%.
