Healthcare

Everybody who lives in Sweden has the right to healthcare. If you are in need of healthcare, your main point of contact is your local healthcare centre. You can choose which healthcare centre you wish to register with.

If you need the help from an interpreter, your care provider can arrange this. You are entitled to an interpreter, and this service is free of charge.

Midwifery clinic

Pregnant women can receive health checks for themselves and for their child at a midwifery clinic. They also provide help and advice concerning sexual health.

You can speak to a midwife directly by calling 040-33 33 00.

Maximum cost card

You can get something that is known as a maximum cost card. Every time you pay for an appointment with a doctor, you will receive a stamp on your card. When the total amount you have paid reaches a certain amount, within a certain period, you will not have to pay for any further appointments during the rest of that period. The maximum cost card is valid for a period of 12 months, after which the cost total is reset and you will start again.

Cancelling appointments

If you have made an appointment but are not able to attend, you may have to pay twice the amount. This fee does not qualify for a stamp in your maximum cost card. If you know that you will not be able to attend, you must cancel your appointment no later than 24 hours beforehand.

Mental health

All of us can find it difficult to cope sometimes. At 1177 Vårdguiden, you can read about things you can do to help yourself if you are struggling. There is also information about where and when you can get help, if you need it.

Dental care

You can decide whether you prefer to go to a private dentist or the public dental service (Folktandvården). Adults must pay for a large part of the cost of their dental care. If you are registered with the Swedish Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan), you can apply for receiving national dental care subsidy.

Children and young adults aged below 23 years receive free dental care. They are offered regular check-ups from the age of 3 years. If your child has an urgent problem, you can make your own appointment with a dentist.

If you are in need of urgent dental care, your main point of contact should be the dentist you usually go to. If you need help during the evening or at the weekend, you can call 1177 and they will tell you where you should go to get help.
