Information from Malmö City on healthcare in the municipality (English)

When you become old or ill, you often need help with things in your everyday life. Then you will be given the help that you need and which is your right. In Sweden it is the municipality where you live that gives you the help you need and which is your right. You apply for help from the municipality. The municipality looks at what help you can be given.

Home care (Hemtjänst)

When you are old, you can live in your own home for as long as you want.
If you would like you can have support and help
to continue living in your own home.
Having home care means that staff from the municipality
come to your home and help you with different things.

The home care service can help you with:

  • getting dressed and undressed
  • having a shower
  • cleaning the home
  • washing clothes
  • shopping for groceries
  • going for a walk
  • visits to the local healthcare centre
  • safety alarm
  • taking medicine

How do you get home care?

If you would like to apply for home care you can call
an assistance coordinator in the municipality.
Call the Malmö City contact centre on 040-34 10 00 and say that you would like to talk to an assistance coordinator (biståndshandläggare).

Tell them where you live and how old you are.
The contact centre will connect you to the right person.

Tell them what you would like help with.
The assistance coordinator decides what sort of help you can get.

You and the staff from the home care service decide together
when they will come to you and how they can help you.
You will have a contact person that you can talk to about your home care.
You pay a charge for the help you get.
The charge depends on how much money you have.

Home healthcare (Hemsjukvård)

If you would like you can have healthcare in your home.
This is called home healthcare.
There are nurses, occupational therapists and physiotherapists
who work with home healthcare. You can get home healthcare
if you can’t get to the local healthcare centre by yourself or by help.

How do you get home healthcare?

If you would like to apply for home healthcare,
call the municipal contact centre on 040-34 10 00.
The contact centre will connect you to the right person.

Care home (Vårdboenden)

If you can’t continue living at home you can move to a care home.
A care home is for those who need a lot of help and care.

A care home is a large building with a number of apartments.
There is also a shared dining room and living room.
You live in a private apartment in the care home.
The apartment has one room and a bathroom
with a shower and toilet.

There is always staff in a care home.
They work daytime, evenings and nights.

What should you do if you want to move to a care home?

If you need to move to a care home
you should speak with an assistance coordinator.
Call the Malmö City contact centre on 040-34 10 00
and say that you want to talk to an assistance coordinator.

Tell them where you live and how old you are.
The contact centre will connect you to the right person.

The assistance coordinator decides
whether or not you can move into a care home.

You pay a charge for the care home.
The charge depends on how much money you have.
The charge includes rent, food, healthcare and nursing.

Daycare centres - for people with dementia (Dagverksamhet)

Daycare centres are for people suffering from dementia.
At daycare centres we do activities together.
We might, for example, listen to music and do musical activities,
do quizzes, solve crossword puzzles, read newspapers and magazines,
do chair-based gymnastics or go for walks. Sometimes we go on day trips.
Together, we eat breakfast and lunch and enjoy coffee and cake.

The Club Cefalon daycare centre is for anyone diagnosed with dementia who is under 66 years of age. At Club Cefalon we do things together.
We go on day trips, such as to museums and the countryside, swim, paint, bake, play or listen to music, and do quizzes.

Assistants, respite care and contact persons

Assistants (Ledsagning)

If you need help getting out on your own,
you can apply for help from an assistant.
An assistant can help you to, for example, visit a restaurant or coffee shop, buy clothes, exercise, get to a meeting place or go to the cinema or theatre.

Respite care (Avlösning i hemmet)

When you care for someone close, such as a family member or friend,
you can get respite care from the municipality.
When you care for someone close,
sometimes you need a break, time to rest and relax.
The municipality most often offers respite care in the home.
We can also take the person you care for on a walk nearby.

Contact persons (Kontaktperson)

If you or someone you know needs help and support with social contact, you can apply for a contact person.

Carers can receive support

You are considered a carer if you help, support or live with someone
who has trouble coping with day-to-day living on their own.
A carer can be a family member, relative or good friend.
As a carer, you can receive help and support from the municipality.

Meeting places (Mötesplatser)

At the meeting places for seniors we do different activities together.
You can meet other people and make new friends here.
The meeting place is owned by the municipality. It is free to visit.

We drink tea or coffee, paint, do gymnastics,
organise parties or play games such as bingo or cards.
We listen to musicians who come and play music and sing.
Sometimes we go on outings together or eat out at a restaurant.
You can choose what you want to do at the meeting place.

You can buy a cup of coffee or tea and a cake if you would like.
Some meeting places have a restaurant where you can buy lunch.

There are several meeting places in different locations in Malmö.
All meeting places for seniors are open
from Monday to Friday in the daytime.
Those which have a restaurant are also open
at lunchtime on Saturdays and Sundays.
