Work and finance

At Sweden's Public Employment Service (Arbetsförmedlingen), you can get information about vacant positions. You can also receive help from both the Public Employment Service and the City of Malmö if you would like to start your own business.

If you are unemployed, you can receive:

  • support and service
  • occupational guidance
  • advice about how to find work or placements (practical work experience).

You can participate in the Public Employment Service’s establishment programme if

  • you have recently arrived in Sweden and have received a residence permit due to your status as a refugee or being in need of subsidiary protection, or if you are a relative of such a person, and
  • you are aged at least 20 years but are younger than 65 years.

Start and run your own business

Are you thinking of starting your own business, or is it time for your business to take the next step?

Benefits, grants and loans

If you are involved in the Public Employment Service's establishment programme, you can apply for benefits. You must apply via the Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan). This is the agency that decides how much you can receive, and also issues the payments.

Are you eligible for introduction benefit and do you have children at home? If so, you can apply for supplementary introduction benefit. For this, you must also apply via the Social Insurance Agency.

If you are unemployed and fulfil certain conditions, you can borrow money from the Swedish Board of Student Finance (CSN) in order to pay for driving lessons (for a category B driving licence). Having a driving licence will often make it easier for you to find a job. On the Board of Student Finance's website, you will find information about the conditions of the loan, how much you can borrow, and how to apply.

The information is available in several different languages.

If you have a child aged below 16 years, you can receive child allowance. The child must have a Swedish residence permit. You will receive the allowance when you have registered the child with the Social Insurance Agency.

You can receive parental benefit so that you can stay at home instead of going to work, looking for work or studying. Parental benefit is paid by the Social Insurance Agency.

You can receive parental benefit if:

  • you are the parent of the child, or if you have legal custody of the child
  • you are married to, or are a cohabiting partner of, the child’s parent
  • you are at home with the child instead of going to work, looking for work or studying.
  • you are insured in Sweden (which those who live or work here usually are)
  • the child is resident in Sweden or within the EU/EEA or Switzerland.

If you are divorced and live together with your child, the other parent must pay for the child's maintenance. If the other parent is unable to pay, you can receive help from the Social Insurance Agency. If the other parent is deceased, you can receive help from the Swedish Pensions Agency.

If you do not have enough money for your everyday needs, you can apply to receive financial support. This may sometimes also be referred to as social benefit or subsistence support. You must apply via the social services. It is the social services that decide whether or not you are eligible to receive financial support.

If you have recently arrived in Sweden, you can contact the Integration Centre for help.
