School transport in pre-school, primary- and special schools

According to the Education Act, student’s may be entitled to school transport because of

• Distance to school
• Traffic conditions along the student's school route
• The student's disability
• Other special circumstances

Applying for school transport

To find out if you are entitled to school transport under the Education Act, you must submit an application for school transport. Once you have submitted an application, an officer will investigate if you are entitled to school transport on the basis of the information you have provided. It is therefore important that you describe in the application why you think your child is in need of a school bus.

If your child is granted school transport

The school transport decision is valid for the period specified in the decision, as long as nothing changes, such as you are changing schools or moving house. You need to notify Malmö City Council if the conditions that led to your child being granted school transport change.

The main rule is that school transport must be provided by public transport using a bus pass. Under certain conditions, the student cannot travel by public transport and needs to travel by school transport vehicle (school taxi, school bus, or special vehicle). The school bus service runs from a location close to the student's home to the school and back, and the school bus schedule is determined by the student's school timetable.

Your child is usually not entitled to a school bus if

• you have applied for a school that is far from home and choose to attend it
• you choose to change schools
• you move but stay at your old school
• you attend an independent school or a communal school outside the city of Malmö.
